A digital atlas to link ontogenic shifts in fish spatial distribution to the environment of the eastern English Channel. Dab, Limanda limanda as a case-study ArchiMer

The eastern English Channel, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea through the Dover Strait, is an area where numerous and often conflicting human activities take place. A cross-border multidisciplinary project called CHARM was initiated to provide knowledge and tools for planners and decision-makers to durably manage the shared marine living resources. One such tool was an atlas of fish spatial distributions and modelled habitats, which was used here to investigate ontogenic and seasonal shifts in fish spatial distribution and habitat through a case-study, the dab Limanda limanda. Survey data for several life-history stages (eggs, larvae, coastal nurseries, < and > 1 year old) and seasons were used to map spatial patterns (using...

Direct assessment of anchovy by the PELGAS05 acoustic survey ArchiMer
Masse, Jacques; Beillois, Pierre; Duhamel, Erwan.
An acoustic survey was carried out in the bay of Biscay from May 3rd to June 1st on board the French research vessel Thalassa. The objective of PELGAS05 survey was to study the abundance and distribution of pelagic fish in the Bay of Biscay. The target species were mainly anchovy and sardine and were considered in a multi-specific context. The results have to be used during ICES working groups in charge of the assessment of sardine, anchovy, mackerel and horse mackerel and in the frame of the Ifremer fisheries ecology program "resources variability".

Identification and characterisation of winter spawning ground in the English Channel and Southern North Sea ArchiMer
Lelievre, Stephanie.
A better knowledge and monitoring of principal commercial fish spawning grounds have become necessary in the North Sea. The efficiency of CUFES was proved by sampling pelagic fish eggs in winter in Eastern Channel and Southern North Sea. Fish egg taxonomic identification based on visual criteria cannot always be carried out effectively. In particular, cod (Gadus morhua), and whiting (Merlangius merlangus) or flounder (Platichthys flesus) and dab (Limanda limanda) have the same range of egg diameter and similar morphologies. Alternative identification methods using molecular techniques were developed to improve the accuracy of egg taxonomic identification. First, PCR-RFLP method, then, in order to accelerate egg identification, the use of a new laboratory...

One-dimensional biophysical modelling of fish egg vertical distributions in shelf seas ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Magri Hoeltzener, Stephanie; Lazure, Pascal.
Modelling the vertical distribution of fish eggs is important when assessing fish stocks with egg production methods and for monitoring the reproductive potential of fish populations. Fish eggs are passive particles and their vertical distribution is determined by a few parameters such as egg density, egg diameter, wind- and tide-induced turbulence, and vertical hydrographic structure. A one-dimensional vertical biophysical, numerical model was developed which was adapted to the hydrography of shelf seas under the influence of tidal currents, wind-induced circulation, and river discharges. The biological part of the model parameterized the ascent velocity of the egg as a function of egg properties (diameter, density) and water properties (density,...

The effectiveness of the continuous underway fish egg sampler compared with standard vertical plankton hauls for sampling the eggs of demersal species in the southern North Sea ArchiMer
Lelievre, Stephanie; Vaz, Sandrine; Fox, Christopher.
To date, the continuous underway fish egg sampler (CUFES) has been used primarily to map the spawning areas of pelagic fish in upwelling regions. To assess its utility in mapping the spawning grounds of demersal species, species composition and densities of eggs collected by CUFES were compared with results obtained from ring-net samples (VET: vertical egg trawl) from the southern North Sea over three annual cruises conducted in January/February. CUFES collected slightly fewer eggs per unit volume of water filtered when compared with vertically integrated samples but maps of egg distributions from both devices showed broadly similar patterns. Geostatistical analyses revealed that small-scale variability was greater with CUFES than with VET. CUFES may thus...
